The NBL has awarded the Illawarra Hawks licence to an international syndicate that will change the team's name as it looks to attract new fans to the foundation club.NBL has confirmed and international syndicate are the new owners of the Illawarra Hawks.

"They have a proven track record in business and basketball to be able to take the Hawks to the next level as the NBL continues on its strong growth trajectory after five consecutive years of record attendances and broadcast audiences as well as increased global recognition." The Hawks are the only team to have played in every NBL season since the competition's inception in 1979 and during that time have been known as either the 'Illawarra Hawks' or the 'Wollongong Hawks'.

There were widespread calls for upgrades to the convention centre earlier this year, after an internationally televised game between the Hawks and the New Zealand Breakers was called off due to a leak in the roof.NBA Executive Bryan Colangelo is no stranger to Australian basketball having drafted Ben Simmons in 2016.

He is also no stranger to the Australian game, drafting NBA rookie of the year and Australian Boomer Ben Simmons in 2016.However, the 55-year-old Chicago businessman was forced out of the NBA in controversial circumstances.
