Research has found lockdowns led to the highest levels of depression and anxiety on record, but even where restrictions have eased, people’s mental health hasn’t immediately bounced back

Before COVID-19 arrived in Australia, about 5 per cent of Australians typically reported moderate to severe symptoms of depression in the previous two weeks, but by April 2020 with the nation in its first lockdown that increased five-fold.

At the height of Victoria’s stage four restrictions in 2020, 44 per cent of people in the state reported moderate to severe symptoms of depression and 34 per cent reported moderate to severe anxiety. In states where restrictions had eased, 32 per cent still reported moderate to severe depression and 23 per cent had moderate to severe anxiety.

“In states where restrictions had eased or there had never been restrictions ... mental health hadn’t immediately bounced back – we thought we’d see a recovery effect and it wasn’t so clear.“I think this says these problems are significant and population-wide, and they really do influence people’s capacity to maintain optimism and continue to fulfil their responsibilities.”

“I agree with the authors’ conclusions that reducing this distress is not just about increasing mental health services. We need to reduce the risk factors leading to distress. The big risk factor found in this study was loss of employment due the pandemic, which shows the importance of the JobKeeper program in protecting mental health.

Professor Fisher said the findings were concerning and showed “Australia needs a pathway to psychological recovery that complements the national cabinet’s current economic and pandemic management plans”.

Yeah

Research found when I eat tacos and burritos I spend more time on the toilet tweeting.

No shit Sherlock! This will be a massive problem well into the future

That to me sounds like that people are not resilient and have not faced real hardship.

When soldiers, some of whom had been imprisoned and tortured, returned from World War 2 mental health was never mentioned. How times have changed.

I’ve got my noose ready to go

It certainly is hard look forward to anything or have hope😔

And this is surprising people? Take away everything they love and hold onto and their finances it is going to happen. And not being able to trust our government just makes it trickle over into anger

SA records no new COVID-19 cases on first day since emerging from lockdownSouth Australia has reported no new coronavirus cases on its first day out of lockdown, which ended at midnight. Why doesn't Gladys use SA as an example to go by, seeing as following the success of Labor states is too damaging to her ego? I have some fear that there's some feral bogan anti-vaxxer sitting at home with COVID who is going to go on an infection spree. We only emerged from lockdown 12 hours ago. Are you foretelling the future?
