ANALYSIS: If unemployment is falling quickly, why are so many people still struggling?

And those official numbers don't include the hundreds of thousands of people who aren't in the labour force but who may also want to work. And for each entry-level job advertised at the moment, there are 23 people who have been on an unemployment payment for more than 12 months and who have to compete with applicants who have only experienced short-term unemployment or who are already employed but want to switch jobs.

Ashlie Stevenson, unemployed, says when she is eligible for the age pension, the extra money will be a relief."Choices that, in Australia, you shouldn't have to make." "I think I've been in five different places in the last two years, but I'm running low on places to drop into and out of," she said. Mr Andrews said he used to be a home owner but he had to sell his property when his marriage broke down.

Why are so many working age people sitting in cafes all day?

We couldn't fill 20 full time jobs at my work in 5 months. Still 8 jobs left. Drive around Geelong and the same signs are flashing, full time work enquire within

If you work one hour a week your not classed as unemployed. Scomo and liberals fill of it .

Because everything has gone up except wages

Just raise interest rates so it lowers the cost of things then people won’t heed 20% yoy pay increases to match the inflating on housing, cost of goods and service etc…

Because you only talk to those who are?

Because the true measure is underemployment. Which is staggeringly high.

Because it's rigged. Not even a secret anymore.

Very sad read we need a different approach with employment and adjustment policy. The entrenched generational poor is what is being created - like the USA (sic)

Maybe because you only have to work for 1 hours to come off the unemployment numbers a less fraudulent approach would be to present quarterly unemployment payment figures. People undergoing workforce training and getting the dole are also dropped out of the stats.

Some may actually be living beyond their means. Living the high life, subsidised by credit cards, no concept of budgeting or restraint - some will never have enough due to blatant wastage. Not all, but some

Because when thing where good they lived above their means,,,million dollar houses,,2 four wheel drives,,all the latest gadgets that's why they are doing 8t hard now,,,,,JUST SAYING

No more migration is one of the key but both parties promote it

A decade of deliberate wage stagnation to boost profits, tax breaks and loopholes for the wealthy and corporations raising the burden on regular people as public services and Medicare are cut by the LNP, rorts, lies and zero policy to help people

To be not counted in the unemployment number you just need 1 hour per FN work . The real number you need to go on is the number of people who work and still get a top up income support payment. To many in temp, unstable and low hours jobs that don't cover the basics

Because the dole in most cases pays more money than an actual job.

The inflation you’re not reporting on, fuel and food bills doubled in 3 years and it’s crickets 🦗 from the MSM

because they did trainee ships with no follow-up jobs and said someone with more than 12hrs a week was working it is more like 22% underemployment but Scotty can spin a yarn he just cant pass the pub test can he

Working in a cafe, care home or hotel will thrust you into the working poor category. A zero hours job contract is an insult to anyone who genuinely is looking for a job leading to a career. These are the job scomo and Josh are growing about. Utter joke

Because unemployment is a bullshit metric and we should be looking at underemployment, as well as comparing the cost of living vs the average weekly salary/the average rate of welfare. Unemployment is useless in the current age

Because the ABC doesn’t report the truth, just the leftist narrative…

A great phrase “unequal distribution of wealth”, when is was 12 a long time ago, 30% of my class finished school and went to work, parents did not think education was much value, my parents were opposite, I ended up with a degree(had value) . Is that “uneq etc”, as I earned more.

Because inflation does not stop growing and the government does not find the formula to stop it

So many people are unemployed from the mandates in vic so how is this calculated?

Dodgy figures, one hour a week ffs, show reality if you want to analyse, someone working in multiple part time low paying jobs gets counted many times

The unemployment figure of 4% is LNP fiction or more like lie.

We already know why, stop acting like this is a new puzzle to solve. The definition unemployed hasn’t changed but neither has wages, that is, the increase in wages is disproportionate to rising costs of living. How many times do economists have to scream and shout this.

Is less than 5 hours a week classified as employed?

They work part time

Unemployment does not measure income/expenses.

Creative accounting

Because State and Local Governments collude to restrict the supply of new entry level housing developments suitable for first home buyers.

Its an antique measure. It no longer informs us like it used to. Economy very different.

The whole unemployment figures are rigged.

This is a perfect example of how inept the abc is, it does not matter how many people are employed if the cost of living has increased and wages haven't. Dick heads one and all.

Because they’re sooks. Wasting money on coffee, Uber eats and parties.

I lot of people still can’t afford to buy their own homes. Banks, real estate developers and agents manipulate property prices for their own good despite the fluctuating economy. There is unequal distribution of health, and the reporting is done by average.

Coz it’s hard to get a full time job after pandemic 😢😢but high employment rate counts the casual job as well 🤦🏻‍♀️ we r still struggling but gov doesn’t care 😭😭

Because the number of people receiving unemployment benefits has increased since the beginning of the pandemic, and those benefits aren't sufficient.

The question is not logically raised. Unemployment is falling quickly doesn’t necessarily means nobody is unemployed. The title writer should learn some basic logics.

Business is screaming for workers, if you can’t get a good job in this climate it’s on you.

When they say unemployment is low. Keep in mind. Ppl working in poorly paid jobs. Casual rates. Crappy hours. Those figures do not paint a true picture auspol

Morrison: Australian economy is ‘stronger’ than all G7 advanced nations Reality: Australians are suffering underemployment, wage stagnation, rising rent & cost of living, unattainable house prices LNP's economy only benefits 5% of Australians:

Palm oil has doubled in price. Please consider legalising modified dwarf palm oil tree for biofuel, cereal, manufacture of coffee, toothpaste margarine soap, cooking oil etc

Because the so-called unemployment rate is grossly understated... It's time to de-corrupt Australia. Don't waste your 1 Senate vote on a major party!

because pay hasn’t kept up with inflation over the past decade. The cost of housing now is ridiculous. Of course people are struggling

Great reminder“…ordinary Australians experienced a period of income stagnation between 2013 and 2020 that was unprecedented since the Great Depression of the 1930s”. LNP should not be bragging about low unemployment.

Too many jobs as there is shortage of overseas students and backpackers which played a role in Australian economy. Could Govt. give per capita jobs just before pandemic and now taking away temporary residents. I doubt there is job creation rather locals didn’t do those jobs?

When reporting on the economy we need to stop looking at how the wealthiest in society are doing, we need to look at how the poorest are doing. With poverty, homelessness and inequality increasing exponentially the case can be made that our economy is in fact doing very badly.

It would be reported differently if the ABC reported the facts rather than invent fiction as Propaganda for the Labor Party and report it as [NEWS] Journalists are supposed to report, not invent Labor / Green fairy tails.

Substantial portion of population is working part time or casual, be interested to know what the underemployed figure is.

If you get a job, you get everything you need to live. Cost of living is nothing compared your hourly rate. If you lose your job, you will be in poverty straight away as cost of living in Australia is comparatively high.

nessiejones22 Because underemployment is a thing.

Because the LNP are ruling… no governing. VoteThemAllOut

Being employed doesn’t mean that you’re getting laid enough or getting enough hours

Because the figures are bullshit. 1 hour per week is not full time work

More jobs paying less I said it years ago it’s turning into a south east Asia, slowly but it’s heading that way while the rich get filthy rich

The cost off living is going up more than we can afford

how 9 years of LNP governance worked out for you? “there was a record number of people now working two jobs, and it was concerning, around 867,000 people working two jobs, and that's predominantly young people and women,'- how good are women? Always believed in miracles!

wages are being suppressed by new backpackers They r also importing Timorese n Vietnamese farm workers Nobody local wants to work on farms as agents r charging 1/2 your pay on comm Is is like bonded slave labor

Having dismantled our manufacturing capability, and offshored professional services in the pursuit of corporate profits a true reduction in unemployment is unattainable - so Government invented meaningless statistics to misrepresent the facts and make themselves feel better.

lol, don't play dumb, that kid the PM accosted yesterday could tell you the answer.

B/c being considered “employed” at one hour per week does not translate to a living wage. How many of these employed are FTE permanent? That’s the real measure.

People don’t understand the difference between needs & wants 👍🏻

LNP’s proposal of a $250 payment to help reduce the cost of living pressure - that’s an extra 0.68c a day 🤣 (after years of privatizing everything, turning superannuation into a scam & continuing to help out the billionaire’s).

According to the government if you have just one day of work it counts as being employed. wtf

Because the dole doesn’t cover food fuel rent and bills.. working poor have part time jobs to make money for buisness and not gaf about people

Because the books are cooked. 1 hour of work is not employment. The casualisation of the Australian workforce with people having to work 2-3 jobs to survive. Reduced conditions. Everyone is struggling except politicians……the rule makers.

Australia's unemployment Labor 2007 inherited 4.2% Unemployment After 6 years of Labor Gov 2013 Unemployment was 5.7% 2022 Unemployment is 4% Calculating Unemployment method 2022 is the same as it was in 2007-13

Stats are rubbish, rents and cost of living in general are high with stagnant wages and we don't have the level of unionisation we need for effective collective bargaining. Join a union now. auspol

People are undisciplined? Discretionary spending issues? Online subscriptions? Lazy? Wasteful?

Ukraine war causing petrol price rise.

You keep lowering the number of hours to qualify to be employed, you keeping increasing the figures. Soon you’ll be class as employed if you work for 30 minutes a week

Cause they don't give a F

Because 1 hour a week doesn’t pay the bills!

ABC should know the answer to this...why are you asking us?

No wage growth

Liberals

Lnp have destroyed quality of life in this country.

There are many questions such as this left un-answered when the reason is so obvious. The government is lying to us. And no-one has the guts to take them on. It's pathetic. Today, we need journalists like Phillip Adams and Hugh Mackay. Where have they gone?

Income hasn’t risen much in the private sector but if you’re in the public sector, you’ve received pay rises. Plus received 100% of your wages during this:

One hour employed = 4% unemployment brag. Fully employed = 8% unemployment reality. LNP don't do reality.

Cost of living 🙈🤷‍♂️👀

It might be a good initiative to allow Pensioners & Jobseeker recipients to work 2 days a week without paying Tax or paying a Medicare Levy to contribute to healthcare. A big cash boost. Lots of jobs advertised as there’s a labour shortage. And it’s a foot in the door to F/T job

The amount of time it takes me to shit each week is considered employment. And jobs work employment has nothing to do with income.

Wages have been stagnant for years cost of living hasn’t.

Cost of living: if you lower cost of living the poor benefit, while the middle class prefer wages rises, the rich prefer tax cuts. As cost of living rises it affects more and more people, that equates to less spending, belt tightening, which means no stimulus, the economy wanes.

Because wages have not risen in line with inflation for the past 10 years. The price of products and services have risen immensely people are choosing between rent and food and medicine etc.

You obviously don't get it . You haven't seen what has happened over the last three years .

Simple really: when the ABS defines employment as working ONE HOUR or more a week, there’s your problem. Worked an hour this week? Congratulations, you’re no longer unemployed. (Government spokesman/politician: “You don’t mind if we take the credit for that, do you? Cheers!”)

ah Duh! because the figures are rigged .With underemployment the policy of both parties for many years now .True employment is but a dream for so many
