Travel is back on the menu, but be prepared to jump through a whole new raft of COVID-testing hoops and airline requirements before you can take to the skies, writes Yemi Penn | OPINION COVID19 travel

While overseas travel has never really been a relaxing endeavour, it’s about to get a whole lot more stressful whenI recently travelled to the US and UK for business and it was not easy. Gone are the days when keeping track of which pocket your passport is in and making sure you’re on top of gate changes is the biggest stressor. I’m not sure we’re ready for the anxiety-inducing hoops we all have to jump through before boarding an international flight.

Firstly, there’s the cost of flying to consider. It’s astronomical and will for many families be prohibitive for months to come. Return legs from places like New Delhi, London and New York are double the cost of the flight out of Australia and there are estimates that prices for international travel won’t return to a pre-COVID normal for another 12 months.

Ensuring you get your test results in time to fly is stressful and it’s a costly requirement too – I have spent $1200 on COVID tests on this six-week trip. The US has had restrictions on international travellers since the pandemic but these are set to lift next month. If you’re over 18, as long as you’re vaccinated, the US will accept you. If you’re under 18, you will be able to enter the US if you have proof of a negative COVID test from within three days of travel.iStock
