Harvard law professor and former Trump lawyer Alan Dershowitz has blasted reaction to US Supreme Court presidential immunity decision, claiming it has devolved into “name calling and ideological advocacy”.follows the Supreme Court ’s landmark decision on Tuesday to grant US presidents, including Trump , broad immunity for actions taken while in office.
While Mr Dershowitz has acknowledged he was “not happy” with the decisions made on Tuesday, he argued it was “not as earth-shattering as people think”. “The extent to which immunity should be granted is not an easy question… But it's devolved to essentially name calling and ideological advocacy,” Mr Dershowitz said.
“ basically says, like Chicken Little, the sky is falling – it's the end of the end of democracy,” Mr Dershowitz said.He pointed out legislative immunity has been granted to Congress through the Constitution and that was extended to state and local legislators through federal common law. Mr Dershowitz asked, “Why didn't Sotomayor mention that? Why does that not mean the end of democracy if judges are above the law?”
