Queensland minister says donor-conceived people’s right to know genetic history outweighs a donor’s competing right to information privacy

But under a bill introduced to Queensland parliament on Wednesday, the clinic will now be required to hand over her medical history and details of her genetic origins. Favarato’s donor was used so many times she has potentially 600 siblings, but only knows about 11 of them.children conceived at a clinic. Advocacy group Donor Conceived Australia estimates that about 80% of donor-conceived adults have never been told.

“And I think donors should tell their families, and I think donors should access counselling as well,” she said.“I feel terribly sorry for donors who did something when they were in a period of youth that they may now be really struggling with. Under a state licensing scheme, the state demand information from any clinic, can conduct inspections of facilities, issue improvement notices and suspend or outright cancel a clinic’s right to operate.

“It’s unfair that there are people out there who have no way to trace their genetic origins,” he said.Queensland Fertility Group managing director Melanie Sibson welcomed the proposed legislation.
