Can art be objectively judged, as Stephen King tweeted, or should more be done to ensure the industry combats subconscious biases when making award nominations?

after non-white actresses Jennifer Lopez, Awkwafina, Cynthia Erivo and Lupita Nyong'o were passed over in favour of Margot Robbie and Scarlett Johansson, who were each nominated twice.

"I would never consider diversity in matters of art. Only quality. It seems to me that to do otherwise would be wrong," he said. His comment immediately attracted significant criticism, with feminist author and scholar Roxane Gay saying she was disappointed to hear his view.

Amazing that something so reasonable can be a controversy

Hear hear. Most Asians (me incl) prefer Western fashion over our own traditional gowns, so really about taste, not diversity.Let's just be colour blind to whoever is behind the art. Didn't Martin Luther King dream that his children be judged by character, not colour?StephenKing

There isn't any case where judging the quality of art based on race or sex is rational. The people lambasting and trying to 'educate' SK are the reason people are looking to the right.. better the devil you know and can live with rather than the one who wants to marginalise you.

where is all this women directed kino at then?

didn't he write a book about aliens that explode out of people's butts

I agree w/ Stephen King. To expect to win simply b/c you are a woman or a minority is saying men are right all along & that you can't win based on merit alone. It should be about the work & the work only. If he is biased & that is the crux that is different.

How disappointing. I thought he'd know better. That's like the old line (still used today), where blokes insisted they will only appoint a person on merit ... but the evidence showed women had to have ten times more merit than blokes to get a guernsey. sexism StephenKing

Diversity shouldn't be a factor in *anything* that is a matter of merit, not just the arts. Pretty simple.

Star’s shady comment in response to Oscars snub goes viralThe actress who announced the Oscar nominations overnight was clearly less than impressed that women have once again been overlooked in the Best Director category. You goys, look at NBL, now there's diversity. Or USA Olympic track and field, among a few examples. 2020 - everything is racist I bet awards in africa and asia are racist too, not an equal balance of white people.

'We're still considered niche': Anger after Oscars snub female directorsEven after a banner year, in which they helmed a record number of the year's top films, Tuesday's Oscar nominations couldn't find room to celebrate female filmmakers. How can women be recognised for her talent, merit and output if one of its Ambassador for empowerment Meghan Markle blatantly allow her husband peddle his influence for her to get an acting gig with Disney CEO, instead of relying on her talent & merits? The hard sell was vulgar. Gerwig is okay but there are better female directors. The never ending femhiss, a gender in disarray.
