'David and Goliath situation': Kylie Hughes' heart sank when a letter arrived in the post from Ikea's lawyers.

Her fledgling business Stylkea, which sells products enabling customers to transform their flat-pack furniture, was in trouble with Ikea over her attempt to trademark her business' name."It is kind of like a David and Goliath situation," Hughes says.

"I looked in the marketplace and wanted a name that described what the business does in a clever portmanteau. There were lots of businesses around using the -kea suffix to describe the fact they were part of the Ikea ecosystem." "That was when Ikea sent me their first cease-and-desist letter asking me to withdraw my trademark application," she says.

Ikea claims Stylkea is infringing its registered trademarks for Ikea and engaging in misleading and deceptive conduct.

Hmm. Looks a bit like trying to freeload.

If I were Ikea, I would be promoting this idea and I'm sure there would be customers that would now be buying Ikea's bland furniture in order to give it a touch of class. Talk about shoot yourself in the foot, ikeaau.
