Witnesses at Australia's DRC_AU have implicitly described an experience common to many with cognitive disabilities - being treated as 'sub-human'. Attitudes need to change, they say. DisabilityRC

“People need to be open, they need to see you don't need to be perfect, disability is ok,” she told SBS News after her testimony.

“I got bullied quite a lot at school because I was slower learning things at class,” she told SBS News.Katelyn Smith is a talented sportswoman.Ms Smith, 23, from Sydney, has an intellectual development delay but is considered high functioning. Her sporting talents include swimming, football, ten-pin bowling and athletics - in which she has represented Australia in the javelin.Nevertheless, she does not feel she is given the respect she deserves.

“They don't have confidence and faith in me that I know how to do it, so they treat you like a dumb idiot.” Senior advocate at the New South Wales Council for Intellectual Disability, Jim Simpson, said people with intellectual disabilities are often considered as social outcasts. He said the commission had received more than 590 submissions from people with disability, their families and other stakeholders, with several stories very difficult to comprehend. But disability advocates and experts say such experiences are commonplace.

Disabled babies usually grow into disabled adults, with shorter & costlier lives. Most dual parenting find this so burdensome, that the original family unit breaks down. Family internal dynamics also suffer for an overall negative loss to some family persons. Disabled myself.

DRC_AU ABSOLUTELY.Our nation has supported an approach similar to the Nazi eugenics program- do they have a disability?Get rid of them. I do not downplay the seriousness and difficulty of caring for someone with disability. But these people deserve to be here, just as much as everyone.

DRC_AU It is inevitable in a public system that such questions will arise. As such births fall under the jurisdiction of public health.
