A prison guard who choked one girlfriend as he threatened to slit her throat and said he would break another’s fingers if she ever lied to him has been sentenced to two years behind bars, but is on bail as he awaits an appeal.
One of Berry’s victims told the court she suffered panic attacks and PTSD-like symptoms after the abusive relationship ended and she felt unable to leave her workplace alone or move out of her mother’s house.“Abuse meant my personality changed and I withdrew until my smile faded and I started laughing less,” she said.Berry told the same woman that he had found someone with the same name as her ex-boyfriend, who was in jail, and “beat” him requiring a “hospital escort”, the court heard.
“His use of the term ‘hospital escort’, intimating that he caused the need for someone to be hospitalised, can only be intimidation. It doesn’t matter that it didn’t occur, it’s the intent to intimidate,” the magistrate said.The following year, Berry told his other victim he would slit her throat if she was lying as he choked her.The woman started to lose vision and felt herself go weak as he maintained his hold for 30 seconds after she asked him to let go of her neck, the court heard.
