On a short-notice trip to Belgium I note we have a day roaming the World War I sites of Flanders Fields. The word “boring” comes to mind – I’m not one of those war history nuts. But my travel writer motto is always: “One person’s boring is another person’s fascinating” – I’ll go explore on behalf of our readers who are the latter.
But the storyteller in me tries to objectively understand why I am so emotional. After all, this is a man I did not know, who fought in France, I vaguely thought, more than 100 years ago during The Great War that began in 1914 and ended on November 11, 2018. It’s also the juxtaposition you experience in the west of Belgium. It is the epitome of European bucolic splendour: green pastures are dotted with sheep, cattle and shaggy-legged horses grazing obliviously; fields burgeon with seasonal crops. Pretty villages offer warm hospitality to those visiting – the Belgian people remain grateful for the assistance afforded by foreign troops so long ago.Yet amid it all are the obvious and confronting scars of battle.
