Daly Cherry-Evans can think of at least one reason to delay retirement from representative football and potentially go around again for Queensland in 2025.
Cherry-Evans sat down before Christmas, listed the pros and cons of representative retirement, and quickly realised he was not ready to walk away. Now, three days out from Origin I, Cherry-Evans is 35, about to play his 23rd Origin game and looking to lead Queensland to a fourth series win in five years.
Cameron Smith decided to call time on playing for Queensland in 2018 because he wanted to spend more time with family, and backing up for the Storm was getting that little harder. “I’m a pretty calculated person. I love knowing what’s ahead, and I’m highly motivated by goals and what the next couple of years looks like. It can be a strength. It can also be a weakness because you’re not in the present. Just ask my missus.“What I do know is when I was dropped by Queensland in 2015, that’s when it sunk in that you’re never promised anything in this game, and you have to earn it and keep it by playing well. That’s the mentality I still have.
