‘I just lost it’: Coach reveals reason behind epic wrestling-inspired Titmus celebration

Dean Boxall, the coach of Australia’s newest swimming golden girl Ariarne Titmus, has revealed the inspiration behind his epic celebration after sheTitmus thundered home in a stunning final 100m to overhaul American favourite Ledecky to win gold in the women’s 400m freestyle – a race while has been billed as the biggest of the Games, such is the rivalry with the elite pair.

Boxall later revealed in an interview with Channel 7 he was emulating the late wrestling icon Jim Hellwig, known better as The Ultimate Warrior. Boxall said Titmus executed the race to perfection, knocking off the American superstar convincingly. “So when I saw it starting to build I thought, ‘here we go’, I thought ‘she can do this’. Unbelievable to execute that under pressure.”“He means everything to me,” she said afterwards. “Coming into this race we knew what we had to do. We didn’t discuss what I wanted to do in the pool.
