One entry-level job is advertised for every 48 people relying on JobSeeker payments, with competition set to rise after JobKeeper ended on Sunday, leaving tens of thousands of people at risk of losing their jobs | AnnaPattySMH

One entry-level job is advertised for every 48 people relying on JobSeeker payments, with competition set to rise after JobKeeper ended on Sunday, leaving tens of thousands of people at risk of losing their jobs.

The Australian Retailers Association joined ACOSS in warning that the $50-a-week cut in JobSeeker from April 1 could damage the economy. ARA chief executive Paul Zahra said the number of people on JobSeeker compared with each job advertised was high and the payment should be raised to the same level as the age pension “to keep people above the poverty line”.

Australian National University social researcher Associate Professor Ben Phillips told a Senate inquiry earlier this month that the poverty rate fell from about 80 per cent to about 25 per cent when JobSeeker payments doubled during the pandemic.Avery Howard, 19, who has been living out of home for four years, said he would need to reduce his grocery bill and survive on one meal a day when his Youth Allowance payment was cut from about $670 to $570 a fortnight.

National Skills Commission analysis shows the number of unemployed persons for every job vacancy peaked at 11.8 in April 2020. It has since fallen to 4.2 unemployed persons per vacancy, as of February. This is below the 4.5 unemployed persons per vacancy in February 2020.
