A coronavirus outbreak in Beijing dashes the hopes of residents and breaks the city's record of 56 days in a row without a new case of the virus.

Beijing residents have had their hopes dashed by a coronavirus outbreak which has sent the number of confirmed cases soaring, and broken their record of 56 days in a row without a new case of the virus.Mass testing is underway for residents of affected neighbourhoodsMost of them can be traced back to the Xinfadi market, the Chinese capital's largest wholesale food market.

Since the outbreak began on June 11, the city has locked down 40 high-risk neighbourhoods, cancelled thousands of flights, and tested more than 2 million residents in the space of a week, according to local media reports. Fengtai district in southern Beijing is home to the Xinfadi market, which claims to be Asia's biggest market for agricultural goods.

"Some of my friends want to play it safe and stay at home as much as they can, as they are worried the virus might have mutated," she said. "I'm nervous. I've been to the mall too," Jiamei said, adding that she didn't think the outbreak was serious until she realised how close she had been to people carrying the virus.
