The mother of a young Aboriginal student who was bullied because of his disability wants to see 'Quaden's law' introduced to protect students from schoolyard bullying | natassiazc

Ms Bayles said her son was no longer bullied at his Queensland school, but that her repeated requests for school support were not met until the video of his emotional distress was shared worldwide.

"He wants to go to school and learn. That's all he says," Ms Bayles said. In the video, Quaden is crying hysterically and talking about wanting to kill himself. "I've suggested that several times to the school; if there is a new student attending this year, I'm more than happy to do an all-of-school assembly [or] address each class ... But there haven't been any dates set aside for that, which is why I believe this continued to happen," she said.

Parents were often told, "Kids are cruel. Your child is better off somewhere else. They're not a good fit. We can't solve all the world's problems. Our teachers aren't baby-sitters."Ms Elder said the Education Department had inclusion and autism specialists that could provide advice to schools. "But what we hear is that schools don't always want to utilise these services, even when parents are requesting [them] ...

"Families did not believe ... they were communicated with regularly about the student's learning progress, they didn't believe teachers had high expectations of the student, or teachers had the required training to provide a supportive and enriching education environment," she said.
