A man who was forced to delay his mother's funeral while trying to negotiate an exemption for overseas travel on compassionate grounds criticises the process, as new figures show 78 per cent of applications have been granted.

When Chris Simpson's mother died, feelings of shock and grief were quickly taken over by stress and anxiety as he scrambled to get a flight to the United Kingdom amid COVID-19.

Due to COVID-19, an Australian citizen or permanent resident cannot leave the country without an exemption, which they can apply for online if they meet certain criteria, including compassionate grounds.Mr Simpson is one of the 6,180 people who have been approved to depart Australia since the travel ban began in March.

"All I needed was to speak to someone on the phone and say, 'This is what has happened, I need to get to the UK as soon as possible, what do I need to do?' Ms Bardsley told Mr Simpson he had not provided adequate documentation in his application, including his mother's death certificate, and eventually managed to get his application granted.

Tears and calls for change at funeral of Rayshard BrooksThe funeral of Rayshard Brooks sees the daughter of Martin Luther King Junior give a speech and call for change at the same church in which her father preached. Maybe Rayshard should have changed. He was a criminal and he died committing a crime. It was justifiable homocide. End of story. Imagine having to go to the funeral of the guy that beat your infant. Why are Democrat-controlled US cities such epicenters of gun violence?
