Hundreds of Thai protesters have gathered in Bangkok calling for police to free arrested activists, defying emergency measures imposed earlier to quell a pro-democracy movement.

Hundreds of protesters gathered Thursday in the Thai capital Bangkok calling for police to free arrested activists, defying emergency measures imposed earlier to quell a pro-democracy movement.

The arrests came after thousands gathered in Bangkok, including on the route of a royal motorcade, with many raising a defiant three-fingers. Thailand's government has banned gatherings of five or more people and the publication of news or online messages that could harm national security under an emergency decree to end Bangkok street protests.

It was accompanied by a document setting out measures that took effect from 4am local time to ban big gatherings and allowing authorities to ban people from entering any area they designation. Thailand's Queen Suthida and Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti react inside a royal motorcade as it drives past a pro-democracy rally in Bangkok. Some protesters gave the three-finger salute - a gesture of defiance the pro-democracy movement has borrowed from the popular"Hunger Games" films - and chanted"get out" at police protecting the vehicle.

I'm not sure they are NSW Police... No. Really? Police did that? Honest? This is more newsworthy than the Premier's dodgy taste in lovers. Police culture worldwide (incl Aus) has been demonstrated to be toxic. It's not just these individual officers that we need to see reprimanded, we also need to see the police culture and training systems fixed.
