Hundreds of mourners have gathered in Minneapolis for the funeral of Daunte Wright who was shot by a police officer during a traffic stop two weeks ago.

Reverend Al Sharpton in his eulogy vowed to stand up against situations like those faced by the 20-year-old Daunte and referenced the conviction of Derek Chauvin over the death of George Floyd, saying Minneapolis had turned a corner.

Police officer Kim Potter was charged with second degree manslaughter after authorities revealed she mistakenly fired her gun at the African American man thinking it was a taser. Mr Wright’s death sparked outrage in the community and more than a week of protests.

Protestors flood downtown Minneapolis to celebrate outcome of Floyd trial | Sky News AustraliaProtestors have taken to the streets of downtown Minneapolis to celebrate after former police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of all three charges brought against him over the death of George Floyd last year.\n\nSky News Washington Correspondent Annelise Nielson said it was a “hugely historic” day for the United States with the jury’s guilty verdict following almost a year of protests, riots and looting.\n\nMr Chauvin will be sentenced in eight weeks and while there is potential for an appeal, political commentary surrounding the trial – which was acknowledged by the judge – has led to speculation calls for a mistrial could be likely. 'Protestors have taken to the streets' Aren't they revellers now? Fortunately the US prison system functions well, isn't brutally violent, and will rehabilitate Chauvin for release back into the community. I hope he spends his time bettering himself and comes out improved as a person. “Mostly peaceful” celebrations 🙄
