Prince Philip’s early life was shaped by the sea so it was only fitting the navy should play a starring role in his death | BevanShields

, Philip was also Marshal of the Royal Australian Air Force, Field-Marshal of the Australian Army and Admiral of the Fleet of the Royal Australian Navy.and an invitation was duly dispatched to Commodore Guy Holthouse, the most senior ADF member in London, last week. Coronavirus restrictions meant the Australian Defence Advisor was one of just four overseas representatives to witness Saturday’s historic farewell in person.

“You do see any number of things over a 38-year career in the Navy, but to have been asked to participate here was an absolute honour.”Holthouse and his counterparts from New Zealand, Canada and Trinidad and Tobago were positioned in the front row to watch as Philip’s coffin arrived on the back of a Land Rover and was carried inside the historic St George’s Chapel.

“Prince Philip’s engagement with the Australian Defence Force actually began in 1940, when he came out to Australia as a midshipman on board battleship HMS Ramillies and began escorting Australian and New Zealand convoys through the Suez Canal,” Holthouse said.
