A hero police officer has told how he rescued a four-year-old boy and two women from flash flooding in the New South Wales Hunter Region. 9News MORE:

Emergency services were notified that three people were trapped in a car on a flooded causeway along Lyons Road, Bingleburra, around 9.30am yesterday.READ MORE: He said the first thought that ran through his head was "holy moly, what's happened here".

He has had experience in similar situations, serving part-time as a rescue officer, including two deployments to flood-hit Lismore this year. Hansen joked the "biggest drama" came with the evening news, when his wife saw the full extent of the risks he'd taken.The near-20-year veteran has been praised by his colleagues for his efforts and bravery in saving the trio.
