Humans have degraded or destroyed roughly two-thirds of the world's original tropical rainforest cover, new data reveals, raising alarm that a key natural buffer against climate change is quickly vanishing.

is destroyed, there is more potential for climate change, which in turn makes it more difficult for remaining forests to survive, said the report's author Anders Krogh, a"It's a terrifying cycle," Mr Krogh said. The total lost between just 2002 and 2019 was larger than the area of France, he found.

The rate of loss in 2019 roughly matched the annual level of destruction over the last 20 years, with a football field's worth of forest vanishing every 6 seconds, according to another recent report by the World Resources Institute. The Brazilian Amazon has been under intense pressure in recent decades, as an agricultural boom has driven farmers and land speculators to torch plots of land for soybeans, beef and other crops.

Central Africa ranks third, with most of the destruction centered around the Congo River basin, due to traditional and commercial farming as well as logging. Forests that were defined in the report as degraded had either been partially destroyed, or destroyed and since replaced by secondary forest growth,

Our current governments aren't smart enough to act on this. They'll just keep destroying the planet, in any way they want, as long as their wallets stay full and their voter numbers stay high

It's easy to blame Humans, but it's the big conglomerates that actually do the damage $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

So true for monetary gain

Sure dinosaurs ate everything long before man came along

Only 1/3 left to go mostly the Amazon Basin (what's left of it,) then it's extinction for humanity, without the Amazon Basin which controls the climate right across earth, the Earth will die and all life upon it.

SBS I feel like the response to this is 'no shit!'. If anybody has any ideas for what we can do to help maintain/replant rainforest, as someone who doesn't live there...

The only question that remains to be told in the history of the human race is if we became extinct via lack of food, lack of oxygen, conflict, disease or a combination of them all. The outcome however is inevitable.

As humans are responsible 'let 'em suffer'. Unfortunately there'll be a lot of 'collateral damage.'

SBS degraded or destroyed journalism in Australia.

Stop breeding.

Cassowaries dying on roads because humans are feeding them, wildlife experts sayWildlife experts say cut grapes and bananas found during autopsies of cassowaries killed in vehicle strikes show people are feeding the birds and contributing to their deaths. People are feeding modern day raptors? Wow an article from “our abc” without a gender or climate change narrative woven in, that journalist must have missed the memo... We are about to become America where we need huge signs that say 'don't feed the animals'. Sad. Really sad.

It's 'very likely' that COVID-19 first spread to humans from bats via another animal, WHO report findsThe WHO study into the origins of COVID-19 finds transmission of the virus from bats to humans through another animal is most likely scenario, but many questions are left unanswered. Not if you ask some dilbert with a beauty school diploma and a year 10 certificate who thinks you can just whip up a virus in a lab. 🙄 Besides the point. Very low mortality rate. Mostly old fatties. Via duck?
