Former West Coast Eagles Daniel Venables is fighting the AFL over a serious head knock that ended his career. What actually happens in a concussion and why is it so dangerous? | Stuart Layt | ANALYSIS concussion AFL

over brain injuries he sustained in just a short playing career has again highlighted the issue of concussions in professional and amateur sport.

Your brain is fundamentally squishy tissue held in place by some thin membranes and protected from the outside world by the hard bone of your skull. It’s this bruising that is the primary initial injury associated with concussion, says Fatima Nasrallah, a concussion expert at UQ’s Queensland Brain Institute. “But the concussion is not the actual bruise, rather it’s the cascade of events that happen as a result of the brain being bruised,” Dr Nasrallah explains. “Depending on how bad that bruise is, you get different symptoms.”

Dr Nasrallah says a single concussion is not necessarily a life-altering event, and most people recover well from even a bad knock to the head. Where people start to see issues is when they have repeated knocks to the head and the brain is not given time to heal. Instead of healing fully, the bruised brain tissues suffer more trauma, which can then take even longer to heal, so the injury becomes cumulative.
