She didn’t become a Hollywood celebrity a la Margot Robbie, so she became an expert on them instead.

Celebrities have long occupied Melissa Tracina’s mind. Whether daydreaming about her idols, or imagining what it would feel like to be one herself, she’s been thinking about the rich and famous since her first glimpse of the silver screen.

In the hopes of achieving this, Tracina attended classes for dance, drama and singing throughout her childhood in Melbourne. But over time, something dawned on her – becoming a movie star is hard. Very hard.“I eventually became self-aware enough to realise it was never going to happen,” she says after a bitter-sweet chuckle. “We can’t all be Margot Robbie.”

Now 34, Tracina hosts Nova 100’s 9am to 2pm slot, sharing the biggest hits with Melbourne audiences every weekday. She’s also the resident cultural correspondent on the comedy panel showand rubbed shoulders with some of Australia’s brightest stars, including Margot Robbie herself. But perhaps her favourite thing about her job is keeping the public across pop culture – a task not everyone necessarily takes seriously, but one she considers vital to the framework of society.

But even pop-cultural moments that may appear more superficial or “low-brow” can become an exercise in analysis and social commentary, she says. For example, celebrity feuds – those between the likes of– have encouraged fans to don their investigator hats and decipher lyrics, find patterns and interrogate the political and social dynamics at play within the entertainment industries.
