With 10,000 steps having been drilled into us as the figure that should be our daily goal, watching our averages fall well below that can be unsettling. But you don't need to be hitting 10,000 steps to stay healthy.

And with levels of incidental exercise declining – we aren’t commuting, ambling around our workplaces, strolling through shops – it’s likely even less achievable.

Professor Jo Salmon, a Deakin University physical activity expert, agrees that 8000 is a good target particularly if you’re used to hitting 10,000. "Sacrificing a couple of thousand steps a day you probably won’t see much change in fitness and health," she says."The more often you can walk briskly, the better it is for your health."

Pavey says aim to ensure you’re meeting the minimum activity requirements outlined in Australian health guidelines. Adults are advised to do 150-300 minutes of moderate intensity exercise each week – that means doing 30 minutes, five days a week, at the very least. For vigorous exercise, the minimum recommended amount each week is halved – so 30 minutes of walking is equal to 15 minutes of running.

Breaking up your sedentary time while at home is important for health and will help lift your incidental exercise levels back up – so, more steps.
