It was never intended that one actor would play the brothers Harrison and Spur in the 1982 film, but once Kirk Douglas got the idea in his head there was no turning back.director Simon Wincer, who was an executive producer on the film, recalls the meeting in the Beverly Hills home of Douglas, who died this week aged 103, in which the actor first pitched the idea.Credit:“It was the Saturday afternoon before the election between Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter,” Wincer says.
The American became a critical ingredient in what went on to become one of the biggest early successes of the so-called New Wave of Australian cinema. The film by George Miller took a pounding from critics but did a roaring trade, and helped launch the film careers not just of the former Crawfords Television people behind the camera – Wincer, Miller and Geoff Burrowes among them – but also of actors Tom Burlinson and Sigrid Thornton.
