Former Prime Minister John Howard has recalled how he was bundled off to a bunker under the Australian embassy in Washington D.C after the United States came under attack from al-Qaeda terrorists on September 11, 2001.

Mr Howard said he was quickly assured his wife and son had been located and were safe but increased security measures needed to immediately be put in place. "I remember the head of my American security detail, he said 'you're out of here... I haven't lost anybody yet and I don't intend to start today'."

In the aftermath of September 11, Mr Howard invoked the ANZUS treaty, declaring the invocation"does mean that if there is action taken then we will naturally consider any requests from the Americans for assistance".Mr Howard said he believed the world had become a safer place 20 years on from the attacks.
