The prime minister was central to paving the way for the Wikileaks founder’s release in a timely riposte to criticism of his leadership and style

His primary interest was the most obvious one. Albanese has advocated for Assange for years, long before he began doing so forcefully and in public, initially as opposition leader and then as prime minister.

The deliberate and determined effort to secure Assange’s release involved many people but prime ministerial advocacy was central to achieving it. Assange, his wife Stella and his Australian lawyer Jen Robinson all credited Albanese significantly with securing the deal that led to freedom. “My job is to advocate for Australian citizens,” the prime minister said. He said his government did this quietly and persistently.

But he also had a message for those at the other end of the political spectrum who berate him for failing to speak louder on international issues and who value public gestures more than private negotiation.
