Alice Springs,Alice Springs Crime,Curfew

As Alice Springs residents wait to hear whether a two-week youth curfew will lift, there's an ongoing debate about what led to the unrest on the town's streets.

Loading...By Wednesday, the Northern Territory's Chief Minister Eva Lawler told a crowded press pack her response would be swift. What Alice Springs locals think about the youth curfew

Alice Springs town councillor and Alyawarre man Michael Liddle is calling for a broader approach to deal with the issues confronting the town.Police allege a stolen ute rolled in the early hours of the morning, with up to eight young men fleeing the vehicle after it flipped, leaving the young man behind. That, NT Police Commissioner Michael Murphy said, resulted in family feuds and violence, and led to another serious fight with 150 people involving weapons.

"What the PALIs will do is maintain some level of expectation that if you're not a responsible drinker, or if you're not in a suitable place, you can't drink alcohol," he said.As part of the chief minister's emergency measures, PALIs were returned to all Alice Springs liquor outlets as part of the contingent of 60 additional police sent in.

The restrictions, brought in 15 years earlier by the Commonwealth, banned residents living in dozens of Aboriginal communities across the Northern Territory from purchasing takeaway alcohol and taking it back into their communities. "The result has been an explosion of break-ins and, most worrying of all, alcohol-fuelled violence," she said at the time.Crime and violence continued to spiral for six months, before Prime Minister Anthony Albanese jetted into Alice Springs to see the state of the town for himself.

Those calls have stirred criticism, with Arrernte elder Elaine Peckham among those pushing back against policies that echoed the NT Intervention – a hardline emergency response initiated by the Howard government in 2007 in response to reports of sexual violence in remote communities. The issues are generational, and include over-crowded housing, poor health and educational outcomes, a lack of jobs in remote communities, crippling levels of alcohol addiction, and decades of poor government policy.
