More than 50 global leaders - with the striking exception of Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and US President Donald Trump - have appeared at a summit at United Nations headquarters to promise more ambitious action on climate change.
The Climate Action Summit opened in New York on Monday, local time with a scathing speech by climate activist Greta Thunberg who said that young people would never forgive world leaders if they failed to keep global temperature rises below 1.5 degrees.Credit:Leaders who spoke at the climate summit included New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
During the opening of the summit, Morrison was in Chicago giving a speech on foreign policy and meeting with Australian tech entrepreneurs. He was scheduled to arrive in New York in the afternoon.The US President briefly sat in the audience before attending a session on religious freedom.
