How Australia’s most popular home reno show sparked a conversation about race | _thmitchell

Reality TV may not seem the most obvious context for a conversation about racial stereotyping, but if the medium exists to hold up a mirror to society, then perhaps it makes sense.contestants Omar Slaimankhel and Oz Malik requested a sit down with foreman Dan Reilly, after the continued use of the word “dodgy” to describe their actions on the show.

In the most recent episode, the two friends took issue with the foreman’s accusation that they had been doing “shoddy” work. During the conversation with Reilly, the pair expressed their concern that using the term, as well as “dodgy”, would add weight to a harmful ethnic-based trope. “It’s most likely going to get played on TV, to our family and friends watching, plus another million people around the country, and it will come across like we are a couple of dodgy wogs,” Slaimankhel said on air.“I’ll give you a perfect example, I’ve been avoiding social media, but when the word dodgy was first used on air, I saw a comment that read, ‘I always knew these boys were dodgy,’” he recalls.

“The network was respectful of our concerns, and so was Dan, the foreman. We felt heard, and then we move on.”

_thmitchell Who cares? The real question is why in hell Scott cam got government money and what he did for it? The show is terrible. It's a 5th rate version of grand designs.

_thmitchell Nothing beats playing the victim on TheBlock

_thmitchell To sensitive, should be a badge of honour or concede you need to do a better job!

HattMuh _thmitchell Shaynna Blaze has been horrid, she has asked on numerous occasions “how are the boys paying for this?” inferring they are doing the wrong thing. But has not said that about any of the other teams. I know they have to have controversy but she goes too far!

_thmitchell Dodgy does as dodgy is. I remember my grandfather using that word for any dodgy builder none being non English speaking migrants. Is dodgy now a cancelled word?

_thmitchell Should be sparking a conversation about HR and employment practices at Nine. This season the contestants have been abused, belittled, berated, lied to, called some damning things and penalised without any DD or investigation. All on TV. In, what is effectively, a Nine workplace.

China launched coordinated disinformation campaign after Solomon Islands riots, report findsAn Australian Strategic Policy Institute report shows China's attempts to shape public attitudes — and undermine Australia and the US in Solomon Islands — achieved mixed results. The propaganda game? Sogavare will believe anything. The riots were brought on by increasing Chinese influence within the islands. THAT has not changed. A tad concerning Well…ironically our media do similar things here and there…. ASPI is an American think tank, it is fake, it is NOT Australian, it is funded by the US military.
