Perspective; Why was Australia ahead of the world in acting against the virus? For the simple reason it didn't trust the World Health Organisation, which it believed was succumbing to China's pressure, writes Peter Hartcher

Was Australia about to put the cash flow of its universities ahead of the peoples' health in the middle of a pandemic? Was the Morrison government about to bungle the coronavirus response as badly as it did the bushfires?

"At this stage," Tehan had said, "we are looking at year 11 and 12 students but the medical advice has said in a week we could look at what would happen with tertiary education students."So the moment that the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister had finished their routine opening remarks to the Coalition party room on Tuesday morning, the smooth-faced Liberal senator from Victoria, James Paterson, took the floor to speak.

Another Liberal, Queensland's Andrew Wallace, wanted to know why the school students who were to be allowed to return to Australia from China were treated differently to university students? But it lasted less than 24 hours. On Wednesday morning, a copy of a speech by Tehan circulated among alarmed government members. The Education Minister was speaking to the Universities Australia national conference on the other side of Lake Burley Griffin that morning.

We were not “ahead of the world”. “We” made unscientific, political decisions based at least in part on prejudices.

You were so wrong. While King ScuMo the Arrogant was parading his sports' rort diversion Coronavirus Emergency plan on Monday he failed the real test to close our borders to Iran. Now the genie is out of the bottle for sure!

WHO? Who's that other than the Wu Han Organization of CCP!! It's a World Hazard Organization that helps the spread of the deadly WuhanCoronavius !

🇦🇺😷😷😷

Travel ban on Iran, Korea, Japan and Italy now!!! ScottMorrisonMP coronavirus

And here I was thinking that it was just seen as a welcome distraction from the Sports Rorts drama that Morrison grasped with both hands and megaphoned for all its worth.

The influence of governments on international organisations is nothing new. The International Energy Agency IEA, for example, does not dare to mention 'peak oil' since 2011 and strongly believes that US shale oil has solved the problem.

But,apparently, that’s not enough now. More preparation work need to be done.

The Chinese expect us all to kowtow

Australia is lucky country to have free Medicare for all that is why Corona virus has litle chance to create major pandemic as in US 🇺🇸 and many other countries where poor canot aford to visit doctor as no medical cover.

fryan Good work australia

Who says we’re ahead of the world in our response? Seems like a dubious claim.

WHO likely to declare pandemic this week. 😬

The great opportunist found way to restore tattered reputation through fake virus response. It's a pandemic so extend China travel ban. But carry on as normal footy, cricket, concerts, chinese meal you know activities guaranteed to turbo charge a pandemic coronavirusaustralia

74Barbara True and also wanted to front run this issue unlike the bushfires which didn't go so well for the Prime Minister.

OMG: it's taken this long to write the truth about this pandemic. Australian government and Media are pathetic. This pandemic has highlighted the control China has over Australia.

WHO does act like a vassal of China in this CoronavirusOutbreak, spent more effort to help CCP downplay the whole thing than to contain the virus

No trusting China and the Chinese is a wise move.

so are they still allowing back the years 11 and 12's? if they do, they make a mockery of their latest 'pandemic' announcement

Hartcher & our criminal Government mightn’t trust the WHO, but we don’t trust Hartcher, from the corrupt MSM, & the Government who’ve simply pulled this stunt as a distraction to the sportsrorts affair. auspol lockthemup coronavirusaustralia

Haha bullshit. It was becauseScottyFromMarketing was so slow off the mark for the fires he wanted to be seen to be quick on this. Everything that turd does is marketing and spin.

Because this time the Government did not reject scientific advice and did not restrain the development of a response to a global crisis. It still held back for 'economic reasons' at the start until the public response was looking like strike three on the way.

Canada followed WHO advice, didn’t ban Chinese students. Has had 13 cases, none from students. Australia has had 24 cases.

I see people putting stuff on their lips with their fingers all day, like paw paw ointment. It’s big with Asian people, that’s got to be a coronavirus highway!

Also, their response to climate change and the bush fires were so dismal they need a win to distract from their massive failures.

When you act first, even when it fails, you can say it could have been worse. That’s the real plan. marketing

Cause we live next to Asia ? Most of the politicians seen to have us located somewhere near England or the US. Plus its a big distraction and excuse to for the lack economic performance.

Singapore closed its borders to China two days before we did. In Queensland, kids returning from China were allowed into schools for two full days before the federal government acted.

When you are ahead of the world in being an island continent

Yeh nah. It was to distract our attention from sportsrorts

A good reason why you have to worry at Scotty's coronavirus panic alert - we wouldn't last 15 minutes in a real pandemic when there are barely enough resources available to cope with a healthy population. The government have gutted the public health sector.

Food you should avoid during virus outbreakWith more than 45 countries infected with coronavirus, a global pandemic seems more likely than ever. Here’s what you can do to prepare. At what point is a pandemic declared by WHO coronavirus when it reaches 100,000 people or more, or more countries? nothing like promoting a bit of irrational fear and panic, huh? take out the china and south korea numbers and what do you have? people shouldn’t be complacent, but there’s no need to think there’s a bunch of grim reapers enjoying a night of 10 pin.

Concerns coronavirus outbreak may converge with state's flu seasonHealth authorities are preparing for a coronavirus outbreak in the midst of flu season and warning the public to stay away from overstretched emergency departments unless they are seriously ill. Rather conveniently, the MSM will give the criminally incompetent LNP a leave pass on crashing the economy because ... the virus. Of course it will... its a flu virus!
