How are Australians feeling after more than two years of Covid? Exhausted, mostly

Health and aged care workers, who have been in crisis mode since the pandemic was declared 759 days ago, are exhausted. Teachers are exhausted. Even those who have been sheltered from the worst effects of the pandemic are exhausted, or are loudly arguing that there is nothing to complain about. That is a different source of exhaustion – the fear that acknowledging the pandemic is not yet over could trigger the return of restrictions.

“People are still just sitting on devices – it’s like they’ve developed an alternative world to mingle in, but it’s not a very happy world,” she says. Schools, already a significant source of coronavirus transmission, have reported an increase in cases at the start of autumn. The Victorian education department recorded 3,669 positive cases in students and 375 in teachers in government schools on Monday and Tuesday alone. The absence rate for students in Victorian government schools in term one has averaged 11%.

The increase in cases at the end of term one has teachers concerned that cases will continue to rise in terms two and three.

The politicians have eliminated health advice and silenced the voice of Covid. Schools are in turmoil, airports can’t function, supply chains are broken yet the word ‘pandemic’ no longer exists.

Frustrated. The place we are most likely to get covid is my kids primary school which covid is burning through at a great rate. But there isn’t any mitigation of infection & NSW are no longer even pretending to try to protect anyone. We have learnt nothing in 2 years, Zero.

Australia could have been in a different position if Perrottett postponed the lifting of restrictions on Dec 15. He & Brad Hazzard could have waited to see how Omicron would spread. They chose economics over health. So here we are.
