The Powerful Owl and Grey-headed flying fox could derail the Minns government’s signature transport-oriented housing reforms after a Sydney council asked a court to intervene to protect both species.
The new planning rules, a major prong in the state government’s plan to address the housing crisis and help build 377,000 homes by 2029, apply to Roseville, Lindfield, Killara and Gordon stations in the Ku-ring-gai Council area. Ku-ring-gai Council claims the Minns government has failed to consider the impact of building apartment blocks on critically endangered habitat and species.The council also argues the state government has broken the law by failing to explain the impact of the TOD reforms and seek and consider public submissions.
“The NSW government is committed to confronting the housing crisis head-on,” he said. “The bottom line is, we all have a shared responsibility to provide solutions so that there are more homes available for families.”
