Homelessness 'snuck up' on 58-year-old mother and business owner Zoe who now struggles to stay off the street. She wants her story to be a warning to the next generation.

Just a few years ago, Zoe owned her home where she and raised her now adult daughters and ran a number of businesses."A few things snuck up on me. There were financial business problems, the relationship broke down parallel to that, my health was deteriorating."Then everything literally collapsed out like a trapdoor beneath me and I was bereft."

After moving out of the rental she and her ex partner shared, Zoe was left at the gates of her storage unit with nowhere to go.She imagined she would get back on her feet as she always had, but her deteriorating health, including neurological conditions, made it all but impossible to find work."I have chronic, complex illnesses," she said.

"I manage them but I don't have the stability of knowing from one day to the next whether I'm going to be upright, able to be thinking clearly, and I'm getting older. Now Zoe's only income is a disability pension, but she said $944.00 each fortnight was not enough to get into the rental market.

Ms Hall — a single mother herself — discovered there was a large cohort of older women finding themselves without a secure roof over their heads."I realised that as a single mother the difference between successful aging and ending up … on the brink of homelessness is really more a matter of good luck than good management," she said. These woman make up the fastest growing segment of the homeless population.

I housesat in my 60 at hundreds of places for 10 years. Pretty stressful.

What about older men? Homelessness doesn't discriminate.

Why is it not possible for the ABC to report on the social housing crisis in Australia and include within the report a breakdown of the numbers of each group in desperate need and suffering homelessness?

The majority of homeless are men! But hey let’s keep talking about women as if they have no agency!

Is this in the Aboriginal community? Or in the ethnic European community of Australians?
