Director Michael Beets creates his 'live' horror movie from a desk in a Melbourne suburb – and he has never met his cast.

But hearing Michael Beets talk about how he creates his "live” movieAt his desk, at home in suburban Bonbeach south of Melbourne, Beets sits in front of a monitor that's balanced on a plastic tub.In two different Australian cities, his six actors wait, phones and cameras feeding in live, ready to go. As the show begins, he refers to a matrix of Post-its on the wall and communicates with the cast on a back-channel, giving them their cues .

He wrote a script in two weeks and scrolled through an actors database to find his cast . They started rehearsing, but pretty quickly Beets worked out they just couldn't do it. It's amazing what you can do with just a phone and the lights you have to hand, says Beets. His biggest challenge is connectivity. He has to make do with the range of internet connections the actors already had, from NBN down to mobile internet. The story is about a group of friends online talking to each other, and Beets can "lean into that lo-fi feel".
