A key feature of the government’s JobKeeper wage subsidy has been widely overlooked – and it could be good news for scores of Aussies.

That’s because all eligible workers will be paid at a flat rate, meaning everyone who accesses the scheme will be paid the same sum of $750 per week.

Professor Tom Smith, Head of Applied Finance at Macquarie Business School, has welcomed the package and said it would help to “keep the economy going”.“If you are in hospitality and only doing one shift a week part-time, you would only get around $200 per shift or $400 a fortnight, whereas the JobKeeper gives you $1500 per fortnight,” he explained.

“Overall it’s a really good scheme and it has a breadth of coverage. The government needs to be congratulated.”this loophole means some Australians will end up earning “significantly more than they usually would”, although it will be the government and not their employers who foot the bill. That is confirmed by the government’s own website, which explains that for participating workplaces, “If an employee ordinarily receives less than $1500 in income per fortnight before tax, their employer must pay their employee, at a minimum, $1500 per fortnight, before tax.”

JobKeeper package 'pits one worker against another' | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Peta Credlin says the government's hastiness to secure the JobKeeper package 'doesn't excuse unfairness … which pits one worker against another'.\n\nThe package which passed on Wednesday sees businesses who earn less than a billion dollars a year in revenue be eligible if its turnover has dropped 30 per cent, but business above that threshold are only eligible if revenue has dropped by 50 per cent.\n\nMs Credlin said the package needs to be rid of 'artificial distinctions between businesses,' because the worker earning an average wage at a large company 'needs help as much as the bloke working for a smaller one'.\n\n'I pay credit to the government for trying to protect us from the economic consequences, of the measures they have put in place to protects from the disease,' she said.\n\n'But the more eligibility rules they've put in place, the less fair it all seems'.\n\n'While voters shouldn't blame the government for the disease itself, they will blame the government for anything that's perceived to be an unfair response to it'.\n\nMs Credlin said the government 'simple rout of a flat fee payment,' one which rewards the casual worker who's eligible for an 'extra thousand dollars of taxpayer largesse,' over a household's main 'breadwinner with a mortgage, and a family'.\n\nImage: AP It’s irrelevant anyway, the system is going to collapse and we will be at war within a few years.
