More than a thousand legal professionals took part in a silent march to protest government-proposed amendments to Hong Kong's extradition law, which could make it easier to send criminal suspects to mainland China.

Thousands of black-clad Hong Kong lawyers took to the streets Thursday in a silent march against a controversial extradition law proposal, as the city's last colonial governor slammed the plan as"a terrible blow".

This week has seen escalating criticism from the city's influential legal communities, including the Law Society - which published a detailed critique of the proposals - adding to opposition already voiced by the Bar Association and multiple chambers of commerce. Legal professionals have gathered to protest only five times since the former British colony was handed to China.Pro-democracy heavyweight and lawyer Martin Lee said:"Once the bill becomes law, we can not guarantee the safety of any person living or working in Hong Kong, or even passing by Hong Kong."

Wall Street marches higher while oil slumpsTechnology, industrial and health care companies accounted for much of the broad gains, which were tempered by a slide in energy stocks following a 3.4 per cent plunge in the price of US crude oil. This is how convoluted the markets are. Like a spoilt brat, as soon as we get a little correction, investors start crying out for easing to save them. Then they start buying on rumours and twitter feeds.
