Asylum Seekers News

Refugees,Home Affairs Minister,Albanese Government

Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil has hit out at a journalist for “factual inaccuracies” in a question about Australia’s laws pertaining to the resettlement of asylum seekers and refugees.

'Not a great question, no offence': Clare O'Neil snaps at reporter amid grilling over government response to illegal boat arrivals

It remains unclear whether the unlawful arrivals were prospective migrants, refugees, or asylum seekers – people seeking international protection but have not yet been given refugee status. It is unclear whether the inaccuracies Ms O’Neil referred to related to the refugee statuses of the newest arrivals or whether their entry through illegal means risked their prospect of resettlement in New Zealand.

The agreement also requires the refugee being considered for NZ resettlement to have been transferred offshore by Australia after July 2013, the year coinciding with the Australian government’s military-led border force scheme, Operation Sovereign Borders . “We've made sure that we've continued to support this incredibly important function of the Australian government… we've invested an additional $470 million in this operation. It's a really important focus of the government and an important focus for me.”
