Energy Minister Angus Taylor says the “historically low” oil prices will “create an enormous opportunity for us to build a strategic reserve” for rainy day scenarios.

On Wednesday, the government announced it would spend $94 million to boost current crude oil supply levels which will be stored in the United States. Mr Taylor said Australia is a “significant consumer of liquid fuels” and demand is particularly high among farming and mining operations and commuters across the country. There have been disruptions to the supply chain in the past which meant “we did not have the reliable supply we needed,” he told Sky news host Paul Murray.

“Putting this strategic reserve in place will ensure we will have that supply when we really need it” at a price “which will provide value for taxpayers”. Previously a number of Australian politicians were concerned by reports Australia had only 30 days worth of oil in strategic reserves.

The whole idea of buying something while its cheap only to be sold later is to ensure that cheap oil prices will not happen. Its economics 1010. The 'enormous opportunity' is too maximise oil prices for more tax & profits

From little things. Well overdue. As safe a place as any . Will take two year to get the storage facilities built in Aus.

Where are we going to store it all

I guess now is as good a time as 10 years ago

If it’s not in Australia it’s not a strategic reserve.

And where are you going to store it and refine it?

Virus app necessary to protect Australia: Dutton | Sky News AustraliaHome Affairs Minister Peter Dutton says the government’s controversial coronavirus app is necessary to get Australia back on track. \n\nThe app, which uses Bluetooth data to record digital “handshakes” with nearby phones, would be used by health officials to assist in the contract tracing of those who have come into contact with confirmed coronavirus cases. \n\nMr Dutton, who recently recovered from the disease himself, dismissed privacy concerns and said the app would help Australia avoid becoming the next Italy. \n\n“There are absolute protections that are guaranteed around the privacy,” he told Sky News. \n\n“All of us have numerous apps on our phones which collect more data than we have here.\n\n“If we’ve got somebody who’s identified positive and look at their contacts over the course of the last 24 hours or seven days, contact those people, get them tested, we won’t have the spread we have seen in Italy.' Kieran_Gilbert Kieran_Gilbert Shame the govt is completely untrustworthy. Maybe if there was any level of accountability on issues like sportsrorts, agnusgate or the myriad other scandals or they hadn't sort to erode our rights & privacy at every turn, or they'd implemented the FederalICAC they promised. Kieran_Gilbert Bull shit lockup the old and infirmed use meals on wheels to feed them where needed and let US get back to work
