From the outside, Starting Point Neighbourhood House is unassuming, with a cream brick exterior and a few chairs out the front. Inside, it's a different story. The ABC spent a day getting to know Peter and the other people who came and went.

From the outside, Starting Point Neighbourhood House is unassuming; cream brick, a maroon roof, and a few chairs out the front.

It was all three-foot high grass when we started … where the units had been burnt out. So it was a matter of cleaning up old bits of cars and junk and trees, broken bottles, yeah, it was awesome at the start. A lot of people wouldn't be getting fresh fruit and veg if it wasn't for the gardens, and not the availability of what's here.

And I come to craft on Tuesdays now, been doing that for a while. There's always somebody here, somebody to talk to. He's very quiet but he's had to learn to call loudly and get on with it, and he gets all the ladies laughing and giggling.Mel Garcia with support worker Bianca Henri in the Starting Point Neighbourhood kitchen.I do volunteering every Monday, help out, feed the people. Today, we've cooked soup, meringues and garlic bread.

They save me rags too, so I give them to all the boys I know who work on cars, so they can save their money that way. How many suburbs do you see with kids wandering around at like six o'clock at night, taking their little brother to the shop and going home? Because they know they're safe. Because everybody knows everybody up here.
