An investigation is underway after the train derailed after running into debris that had fallen onto the tracks near a tunnel, state media reported.

The driver of a high-speed train in southern China has been killed and eight people have been injured after two cars derailed after hitting a mudslide, according to state media.Video footage showed severe damage to the car of the driver, who diedThe accident occurred early on Saturday as the train was entering a tunnel in the inland southern province of Guizhou.According to state broadcaster CCTV, the train derailed after running into debris that had fallen onto the tracks near the tunnel.

Video footage published by multiple Chinese outlets showed severe damage to the driver's car, which was pulverised by the impact while the rest of the train remained largely intact.A rail conductor and seven passengers were injured and sent to hospital, CCTV said, adding that "their lives were not in danger".

Japan has not had a fatal accident in nearly 60 years of bullet train use. China's service does not seem to be as safe. They also had a crash that killed 40 people 10 years ago and a train caught fire a few years ago.

I’ve taken that train.

Thoughts and prayers to the people effected. It seems Year of Tiger does not bode well for China this year.

Wonder if the power cuts had anything to do with it.
