New research to investigate the potential of a new drug to fight MND.

There's hopes new Australian-led research will lead to a landmark clinical trial of a new drug to help fight devastating Motor Neurone Disease.

The research is focused on whether the drug has the potential to protect the structure of nerve cells, in order to maintain connection between the cells. "It does this by sending messages along what are known as axons which are like electrical cables which stimulate the muscles."In motor neuron disease they break down, so we're looking to see if we can protect these electrical cables themselves rather than the actual cells in the nervous system.Major step forward

"Most research has been done in the lab or with animals, so a pre-clinical trial is a really big deal because it's the next step.""People who have MND have one hope, and that is they will be cured, but even moreso that other people won't get MND," she said.
