Barnaby Joyce, new Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, needed to be sworn in to his new job by the Governor-General, General David Hurley.In normal times, which is to say, decidedly not now, the Prime Minister would attend such an event to witness with his own eyes that Barnaby was henceforth legally entitled to preside over the nation as Acting Prime Minister should he, Scott Morrison, ever feel it was safe to leave the country in such hands.
But Morrison, fresh back from his travels around the pubs of the Old Country while the now-vanquished Michael McCormack was in charge, is in quarantine at The Lodge, lest he brought back anything unfortunate from the environs of Cornwall, from whence an ancestor long ago came in chains. And so, Prime Minister Morrison’s image was beamed in to Government House, a spectral presence on a giant TV screen overseeing Barnaby’s triumphant moment.
Barnaby, being Barnaby, waved to the PM. More correctly, he waved to a picture of the PM on a TV screen. A moving Joycean touch.Barnaby’s latest little family was there, too, of course.Little Sebastian recognised the splendour of the moment and charged across the Government House reception room, imagining, perhaps, that he would be swept into his Dad’s waiting arms.
