Tula the maremma is the hero of Middle Island's famed penguin protection program, and she's retiring after almost a decade guarding her flightless colony.

After almost a decade spent protecting a famed little penguin colony in south-west Victoria from fox predation, Tula the maremma sheepdog is hanging up her lead.Tula will retire after protecting the penguins on Middle Island from fox attacks for the past nine yearsIn August 2017, while bad weather kept the dogs away from the island, 140 penguins were killed by a fox attack

Along with her sister Eudy, 11-year-old Tula has been guarding breeding penguins on Middle Island, near Warrnambool, since she was just two years old. Now with new maremma pup Mezzo trained to be a penguin protector, Tula can look forward to a well-deserved retirement. "She's got a bit of arthritis so she finds it really difficult to get up all those flights of stairs on to the top of Middle Island," said Middle Island Project coordinator Patricia Corbett."Maremmas don't like to not have a job, so she's going to be continuing on her role in a different way," Ms Corbett said.

"She will still be protecting chickens at a farm that they rest at and she'll also be helping us train our younger guardian dogs."

When Telstra shut down the Talking Clock, one man took the time to salvage itA musician with a penchant for nostalgia and 1990s web design has recreated 'George' the Talking Clock, a service recently unplugged by Telstra after 66 years. That must be the talking clock I used to phone up when I was a kid. It would say 'at the third strike it will be 12 o'clock and 30 seconds, etc.' it was a great idea at the time.
