Heritier Lumumba launches a legal claim saying Collingwood failed to protect him from racial abuse or racially-offensive conduct during his time at the AFL club.

Heritier Lumumba is suing Collingwood and the AFL over racist abuse he was allegedly subjected to during his playing days, claiming he suffered trauma, humiliation, distress and loss of enjoyment. This year Lumumba alleged a lack of anti-racism policies allowed a culture of discrimination at the club and said some teammates had called him "chimp"

"[Collingwood] failed to take any or any sufficient steps to provide and maintain a safe working environment, including by protecting the plaintiff from racial abuse or racially offensive conduct. The documents also claimed that the AFL owed a duty to Mr Lumumba to take "reasonable steps to prevent players subjecting other players to racial abuse and racially-offensive conduct, and to impose sanctions on players who breached those rules".

The court documents set out that Mr Lumumba is seeking damages, exemplary damages, interest, costs and "such further orders as the court considers just".

AFL call means Rio Tinto has lost 'social licence': Indigenous leaderThe loss of a partnership with the AFL would show that mining giant Rio Tinto had lost the company's 'social licence' in Australia, according to leading Indigenous academic and activist Professor Marcia Langton. Very good read! and true! I think it goes even further relating to the fact Rio didn’t need to consult with Traditional Owners based on the need for Rio to stop destroying Significant Cultural Sites Period Marcia has nailed it. OK corporate Australia, step up, these programs cannot be lost to Indigenous Australian youth. $1.5 m is a very small slice of ‘leadership’ salaries &/or bonuses. Crowd funding if all else fails. I feel sure some big firm will step up to partner the AFL.
