The Herald's View: While his behaviour cannot be condoned, Nick Kyrgios could be Novak Djokovic’s new great rival - if he wants to be

If the era of the three greats of men’s tennis is to end, it is going to take more than a petulant Australian with a deadly 220km/h serve. That we now know.men’s final was not a case of Kyrgios beating himself with his own histrionics. That would be too simplistic. Indeed he did not help himself but, as Kyrgios rightly noted, Djokovic plays God-level tennis. Once Djokovic had figured out how to break Kyrgios’s serve, it was just a matter of time.

might have either. The Russian was banned from playing at Wimbledon because of the war in Ukraine – unfairly in thes view. The ATP reacted as it should by not awarding rankings points for the tournament, which doesn’t help Kyrgios at all in his quest to do better at the US Open in August-September should the ACT Magistrates Court allow. Still, Kyrgios’ ranking has never helped nor hindered him before.

Given Federer, 40, is still working on a return from a knee injury requiring three surgeries, and 36-year-old Nadal’s body is showing the scars of two decades of playing with unmatched ferocity, the setting of those alarms may never again occur. If the opportunity to see the sport’s two gentlemen play each other again is over, what a joy it was. That said, Nadal did win the 2022 French Open on one leg.
