HECS-HELP $3 billion budget relief welcomed but debtors hope for further action

Debtors are calling for further HECS relief in next week's budget in addition to the $3 billion wiped from student loans .The government will need to legislate its HECS changes after the budget but the Greens have suggested they could make support conditional on the government going further.

For almost 35 years indexation has been calculated based on the Consumer Price Index , which is now at historic highs. "The short-term relief will make a difference. It'll reduce my balance owed by $1200 which is fantastic." As well as indexation reform it called for changes in the way banks consider HECS loans so Australia's three million student debtors aren't prevented from obtaining a mortgage.

"We've listened and we're responding and that's why we've acted to not just change this but to backdate it and make sure we wipe out what happened last year."
