Heavy rain forecast for Sydney as bureau issues further warnings | sallyrawsthorne

In a warning issued early on Saturday morning, the weather bureau said a weather system developing on Saturday is likely to remain all weekend “driving widespread showers and heavy rain along parts of the eastern coast of NSW.”“Six-hourly rainfall totals between 80 to 150mm are possible.”“An East Coast Low may form within the trough early on Monday and linger until Tuesday, which will prolong this significant rainfall event across multiple days,” the warning said.

A minor flood warning has been issued for a number of other catchment areas, including the Wollombi Brook and Lower Hunter River, the Central Coast, Lake Macquarie, the Cooks River and the Georges and Woronora rivers. The bureau has also warned of strong marine winds across Sydney enclosed waters, the Sydney coast, Illawarra coast and Batemans coast on Saturday and a gale warning for Sydney, the Illawarra coast and the Hunter coast on Sunday.

Ten days ago, the bureau declared the end of La Nina, a weather system that brought record-breaking rainfall and floods to Australia during the past year, but warned it had a 50 per cent chance of emerging a third time.
