The fault in a machine that takes over the function of the heart and lungs during surgery was the second equipment malfunction at the Austin in the past month.

Cardiac surgery has been suspended at one of Melbourne’s largest hospitals after a fault in a machine was discovered during a heart operation – the second equipment malfunction at the facility in a month.it was aware of a technical issue with a cardiopulmonary bypass machine at the Austin Hospital in Heidelberg on Friday.The patient’s surgery was interrupted by the equipment fault, but they were not harmed, an Austin Health spokesperson said.

The Austin Health spokesperson said the patient, who had been in a serious but stable condition, had improved, and was now in a stable condition.While cardiac surgery was paused at the Austin after the latest incident, patients would continue to receive surgery with other health services. Australian Medical Association Victoria president Dr Jill Tomlinson said equipment faults or malfunction could cause serious harm.

Austin Health welcomed the review findings and apologised to those impacted by the elective surgery cancellations.issued after the Safer Care Victoria review that a problem with the washers resulted in small specks of black rubber sticking to surgical equipment after it had been washed.
